The Importance of a Background Check

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Sue Edwards Late one afternoon, while working as a police sergeant, I noticed one of the part-time officers (a 24-year-old man named Paul) walk into the station and ask if he could talk to Mike, an officer who was on duty at the time. I told Paul that Mike was out on patrol, but he could wait until Mike came in for a break. Paul looked pale and visibly shaken, so I asked if I could do anything for him. Paul asked me if he could speak to me privately. I told him, Of course and we went to a private area of the police station. Paul told me earlier that afternoon three hunters had come onto his property and started shooting at the geese around the pond near his house, then the hunters began shooting at his dog, wounding her. He said he yelled at the hunters to stop shooting, and get off the property and thats when the hunters began to shoot at him. He grabbed his AK47 assault rifle and began firing his rifle into the air. Paul said, at this point the hunters ran away. Paul told me one of the hunters ran back to his car and called the state police. Paul said the state police arrived within minutes and confiscated his rifle and other guns he had in the house. The police arrested him. Paul said he was released from custody after being able to prove he was a federally licensed assault rifle dealer. Although this incident had nothing to do with our police department, it still reflected badly on us, because Paul was one of our part-time officers. This incident was headline news the next day. Paul was put on suspension and eventually terminated from employment. After doing a more extensive background check, our Human Resources Department found that Paul had been expelled from the college he was attending because he had an AK-47 assault rifle under his bed in his dorm room. Paul never stated on his application, that he was a federally licensed dealer of AK-47 rifles or that he had been expelled from college because of the rifle incident. This true story illustrates the need for better and deeper background checks. In this instance, the Human Resource Department did not do a thorough enough background check to reveal Paul had left out important information on his application. This incident could have cost our department more than just a black eye to our reputation. The Best Always & Stay Safe, ~ Sue R. Edwards This article is 1 of 3. How Guaranteed Approval Credit Cards Can Help You

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Morgan Hamilton Do you have bad credit? If you do, then you are probably thinking that you will have a hard time in getting a credit card. Credit card companies offer cards to those who are most likely to pay for them because they do not like to risk the chance of not getting paid. Well, let me tell you that you can get guaranteed approval credit cards, even if you have no credit or bad credit. Theres a good chance that you havent heard about guaranteed approval credit cards because they are a rather new idea in credit cards for people with bad credit or no credit. In general, traditional credit cards and guaranteed approval credit cards look similar. Both of them have a major credit card company logo and you can use them wherever the companies credit cards are accepted. However, guaranteed credit cards do not require a deposit or you do not need to open a savings account. You usually have to agree to upfront fees and charges made to your credit card, so that you can get a guaranteed credit card. You have to agree to let the credit card company charge a processing fee and annual fee to your card before you can get it. The initial credit limit is usually low and the remaining balance will be less than $75, once these fees are charged to the card. This means that you have to pay off these fees in order to really be able to charge much to your credit card. You may also choose to get secured cards which is another form of guaranteed approval credit cards. This may even turn out to be a better option. However, you need to have money upfront in order to open a savings account that becomes your card balance. Most secured credit cards require a minimum amount for opening an account, while only a few allow you to spend all the money without worrying about large fees. You can also build a good credit history through guaranteed approval credit cards if you have no credit or bad credit. You also have to remember that comparing the different cards and choosing the most suitable one is the key to getting the most from guaranteed approval credit cards. You may receive a traditional credit card offer from a credit card company if you keep your credit cards paid up and in good standing. The time you spent in using guaranteed approval credit cards will be really well worth it in the end. Wedding Planning - Part VII

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Michael Russell In this seventh article in our series on wedding planning we’re coming down to the home stretch. What follows should be started 2 weeks before the big day. The first thing, as a bride, that you should do is plan your wedding day hair style. You don’t want this to be too flashy. People should be looking at you and not your hair. When going to the stylist to plan this bring a head piece and a veil. This way your stylist will be able to get the best idea of what will work for you. After you’ve decided on what you want then schedule an appointment with your stylist for the day of the wedding. This is something that can’t be done the day before because by the next day you’re style is pretty much shot to heck from simply sleeping on it. During this time is when you do your final check on the bridal party clothing. At this point everything should be just right and ready to go for the big day. Notify the newspapers about the event to they can post an appropriate notice. People who you may have not thought to invite may see it and decide they want to stop by the church or temple to see the ceremony. Posting the time and place of the event gives them this chance. Arrange for your name and address change. You’re going to be moving to a new place and you want to make sure that everybody knows where to find you and how to get in touch with you. This will also include any change in phone numbers as well. Check with the caterer and reception venue to go over any last minute changes such as special diet problems for some of your guests where special meals will have to be made for these people. We’re now about 1 week away from your wedding day. During this time the following items should be taken care of. This is when you remind the rehearsal dinner guests about the time and location of the rehearsal dinner. People tend to forget things especially if they don’t write them down. Remember, this is your day and you can’t assume everyone is going to have the same priorities in regard to it. Assume nothing. Make calls, send letters, do whatever. Just make sure that everyone knows where they have to be and when. Start your honeymoon shopping and packing. Make sure that you have everything you need for your trip including enough luggage to carry it all. Wrap all gifts that you’re going to be giving to your bridal party. If you’re not good at gift wrapping then have somebody do it for you who is. Check to make sure you have your wedding announcements ready to mail the day after the ceremony. You don’t want to tempt fate by mailing these out ahead of time. During this time you’ll also have the bridesmaid’s luncheon, and schedule your rehearsal 1 or 2 days before the wedding. Go over all the details of the ceremony with everyone involved. This is going to be your last chance to do this. Assign any small jobs that need to be done to family and friends. Make sure you pick people you can depend on, even for the smallest of jobs. In the final article in this series we’re going to cover what you’ll be doing the day before your wedding and your wedding day itself. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Weddings ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Wedding-Planning—Part-VII&id=132177 where can i buy phentermine phentermine online free shipping phentermine no prescription no doctor phentermine without a doctors prescription

Fertilizing Your Vegetable Garden

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Bill Prudehome Most home gardeners waste a great deal of money on garden fertilizers, primarily because they either apply a lot more product than is needed or they apply the wrong products. Fertilizer should be applied to garden soil based on: The soils natural fertility, Quantity of organic matter that is present in the soil, The type of fertilizer being used, The vegetable or fruit being grown. There is only one way to determine the current condition of the soil and that is to have the soil tested by a laboratory. When you have received the test results, you will be able to determine what areas of the soils structure need to be improved and hence, choose the correct formulation and type of fertilizer. Soil testing is available from: Most universities and colleges that offer agriculture programs, State Agriculture Departments, Private laboratories, Garden Centers, On-line garden facilities. Fertilizer Analysis: Fertilizers, by law in the US and Canada, must provide an analysis of the three main elements of their fertilizers formulation, commonly known as N-P-K, which we mistakenly refer to as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium when in fact the N stands for nitrogen, P for phosphate (P205), and the K is for potash (K2O). The numbers given, on the bag or box, are based on each elements amount by a percentage of weight. As an example, a 50-pound package of fertilizer labeled 10-10-10 would have 5 pound of N, 5 pound of P205 and 5 pound of K2O. The conversion is as follows: To convert: P205 to phosphorus multiply the weight by 0.43. K2O to potassium multiply the weight by 0.83. In our example of the 10-pound package of fertilizer, you would have the following elements: Nitrogen = 5 pounds. Phosphorus = 2.15 pounds. Potassium = 4.15 pounds. Fertilizers and pH: The pH of the soil is as critical as the elements available for plant nutrition as pH extremes can stop the nutrients from being available to the plants. Your soil analysis could show that the elements are in fact in the soil but with a pH around the 8.0 level elements such as phosphate, iron, and magnesium will not be absorbed by the plant roots. If the pH is 4.5 or lower, elements such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus will not be readily available for the plant to absorb. In some cases, having the wrong pH can increase the availability of certain elements to a level whereby they are toxic to the plant. Soil that contains aluminum at a low pH will have a toxicity problem. The pH can be raised by the addition of lime. Vegetables do best with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Elements: Believe it or not, a prosperous vegetable garden requires 16 elements that are essential for healthy plants. The air and water provide three of the elements - hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. Plants also require three elements in large quantities; termed macronutrients, these are the elements that are contained within commercial fertilizers - nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Three other elements that are essential and also considered to be macronutrients are calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Most home gardeners do not have to concern themselves with these three elements as they are generally present in most soils and are added by the use of materials such as lime. The seven micronutrients are required in trace amounts and do not present a challenge to most home gardens as they are normally present within the soil and are enhanced with proper soil preparation techniques. It is important to use both synthetic and organic fertilizers. The trace elements that are needed for a healthy garden are present in the organic fertilizers. As synthetic fertilizers are chemically formulated, they are a relatively pure product without additional trace elements within them. The best organic fertilizers are manure, mulch, and compost. Summary: It is impossible to know what supplemental fertilization is necessary in your vegetable garden beds, to produce abundant and healthy plants, without soil analysis. It would be like going to the pharmacy and buying an assortment of pills, because you dont feel well, without having a doctor determine what is wrong with you first. Once you know what is lacking, you can purchase the correct fertilizer and use it in proper amounts. By Nikhil Jain Do you know how and where to moisturize? Here are some helpful hints MOISTURISING our skin is essential to maintain that ‘young, beautiful’ look. When using a moisturizer, always apply it to the skin in a circulatory motion. Pat your skin with the tips of your fingers gently as if playing a tune on a piano. This is also a great stimulant for your skin. 4. Tired of buying moisturizers too often? Here is how to make them last longer. Use a small amount of natural vegetable oil as a base first. Aromatherapy - What You Must Keep In Mind About It

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Michael Russell What is aromatherapy? Aromatherapy is a skilled and controlled system of caring for the body with the use of botanical oils including essential oils distilled from flowers, plants and trees, roots, seeds, barks, grasses, herbs etc, with the purpose of relieving pain, hair care, care for the skin and to alleviate tension and fatigue, in other words some kind of healing through a chemical effect on the body. In some parts of the world, these essential oils are taken internally as well. There are many essences - Lavender, Jasmine, Chamomile and Peppermint, Rosemary - to name a few. The common methods of using these oils are by adding to a bath, they can be inhaled directly, massaged through the skin, used with teas or other liquids, cooking with herbs, used in a diffuser etc. A word of caution Perfume oils also known as fragrance oils, which contain unnatural chemicals do not have the same therapeutic effect as the essential oils and are sometimes sold as aromatherapy products. It is therefore important that one looks at the label to learn what the ingredients are before making a purchase. You have to be careful and very selective when purchasing your essential oils. It is always better to pay more and buy them from a reputable company as you will be guaranteed of the quality rather than buying from an unknown source as they might be diluted and not pure. It must be also kept in mind that essential oils are highly concentrated and if not used properly and carefully they could be harmful. When in doubt do not hesitate to consult your doctor or even a well trained and qualified person who deals with aromatherapy. Some points to be kept in mind are: . With the exception of lavender and tea tree, other undiluted essential oils should not be used on the skin. However, it is very important to note that the use of undiluted lavender and tea tree too, should only be left to experienced aromatherapy practitioners and the application of these too should be done only very rarely as the use of undiluted oils could cause problems in some individuals. . Generally, essential oils are not to be taken internally. Only unless specified by your physician should these be administered internally. . It is advisable to always do a skin patch test if you are using the oil for the first time and more if your skin is very sensitive. The skin patch test is done by putting a small amount of undiluted oil onto the inner elbow area and keeping it there for a period of about a day and observing if there is any reaction. If there is no reaction then it would be safe to go ahead and use the oil. . It is best if you avoid using essential oils if you have a health condition or if you have asthma, or if you suffer from epileptic fits and it should be avoided when you are pregnant. . The essential oils should be used sparingly and only use the specified quantity. . Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children. . Most Essential oils are a potential fire hazard as they are highly inflammable. They should therefore be stored properly. The Most Popular Flower Fragrances

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Robbie Darmona What everyone is astonished at a flower, is its fragrance. There are different flower fragrances as there are different flowers. But some of them are less popular than others. That comes from the fact that people prefer specific flower fragrances and are indifferent to others. The most admired flower fragrances are the following ones: Roses. Roses are regarded as the finest of flowers, as the queen of the flowers. That is because of their incredible flower fragrance. Rose fragrance is used for making of many perfumes. There are two main species of roses: the Rosa centifolia (found in the south of France) and the Rosa damascena, known as Damask Rose, which can be seen mainly in the Arab countries. Roses were greatly used by the Greeks and Romans. The gathering of roses should be at night, because the rose fragrance is stronger before sunrise. Violets. The flower fragrance of violets has a wide variety. There are different kinds of violets, but the two most common are The Victoria Violet and the Parma Violet. Violets were largely used in perfumery, as well as in medicine. The essential oils that violets produced can nowadays be synthetically superseded by various chemicals. Orange flower. They are grown in the south of France, Spain, Italy and the north of Africa. Orange flower is associated with brides, mainly because of its fragrance, and because of its beautiful flowers as well. Its flower fragrance is one of the most popular for making different scents. The oils extracted from orange flowers are called neroli, after the Italian Princess of Neroli. She was the first to start using orange flower fragrance on her gloves. The oil of petit grains is obtained by distillation of twigs and leaves. Jasmine. This is another pure flower fragrance. Jasmine fragrance cannot be mistaken with anything else, as it is highly specific and brings intense pleasure to the senses. Jasmine is gathered before dawn, when its flower fragrance is at strongest. Taking care of the gathered jasmines is essential. Jasmines have to be processed immediately after picking, because their flower fragrance and freshness soon fades away. Another thing is that jasmines have to be put in special baskets where their natural look is preserved for a while. Lily. Lilies are the most commonly- grown flowers in everyones garden. That is because they are easy to grow. Their flower fragrance is fresh and light and it brings to mind beautiful thoughts. In between June and August is the bloom of lilies in every garden. Their trumpet-like shape of the flower can be seen in various tints and nuances. Lily can be planted either in autumn, or in spring. The flower fragrance and the beautiful colours make lilies liked by everyone. Ylang-ylang. Ylang-ylang has beautiful flower fragrance and is almost inevitably used when making all kinds of perfumery. The flower comes from southern Asia. Ylang-ylang should be gathered when its buds have been opened for several weeks. After picking, the flowers have to be quickly processed so that they retain their flower fragrance. The flower fragrance produces sensual delight in women, as well as in men. Another thing to be known about ylang-ylang is that its oil can easily be replaced by synthetic materials in cheaper perfumery. Plumerias. Plumerias are a sort of trees. Their flower fragrance is irresistible, and their colours are various. The flowers from plumerias are used in the Hawaian leis. The Polynesian people value them very much, because they are durable and soft-scented. Their colours differ from white and yellow to red, violet, pink and other multiple pastels. Once picked, a flower retains its good look and flower fragrance for several days, if kept in water. Another specificity about plumerias is that the blooming of flowers lasts about 3 months, with new flowers being produced on the tree daily. The Sabbath Blessing

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Debra Lohrere In Christian circles, even among those who do believe in keeping the ten commandments, there has still been confusion over the fourth commandment and whether we should be keeping the Sabbath on the seventh day that was ordained, sanctified and made Holy by God at the time of creation. To be able to develop a close relationship with God, we need to spend quality time with Him. He set aside this day as a special time of communion with Him. It is a time where we can study His Word, and let His Holy Spirit speak to us through it. A time that we can spend in earnest prayer, talking to Him, praising and worshiping Him. It is also a time that we can look at nature and reflect on all the wonderful creations that He has made. And finally, it is a time that we can spend with fellow believers, to worship together in song and have fellowship with each other, encouraging one another and building up each others faith by our testimonies. God also gave us this special day as a day of rest. In this hectic world with our busy lifestyles it is so easy to get so engrossed in other things that we never have time for God and never have time to just stop all our work and let our bodies recuperate. Some Christians spend a couple of hours of a Sunday morning attending church, but then the hum drum of the rat race catches up with them and they start doing household chores like mowing lawns. Others go to the footy, or do other secular activities where God is just not a part of it. With stress related diseases like cancer and heart attacks on the increase every year, the necessity to take a days break, and bask in the presence of our all mighty father in Heaven, has never been so important. We need to spend time with Him to be replenished and rested. God gave us His Sabbath day as a blessing to all mankind. A day on which we could spend time with Him to get to truly know Him and fellowship with Him. A day on which we do not have to do any work or labour. A day to rest, away from the worries and cares of this world. God also ordained the seventh day Sabbath as a day in remembrance that He is the Creator of Heaven and Earth. The Bible says, Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work. The scriptures also show us the true spirit of the Sabbath. Isaiah 58:13-14 If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight.. This shows that the Sabbath is a delight and a blessing. It is a wonderful day and something to look forward to each week. All Bible references are from the King James Version. Countdown to Showdown-152 Days Until The Wedding

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Alan Speaker Jr. Well there is only 152 days left until I get married! I should introduce myself, I am Alan and I was what I thought was happily married for 17 years until this past June. Then I wasn’t. That quick. Long story and we will get into it as it comes up naturally, no lies and little sugar coating. Life is real. This is reality. Faced with the distinct possibility of being single for the rest of my life,(I am almost 50 and almost 350lbs!) I came face to face with the terrible shock of my baby brother’s sudden death! Of natural causes no less! Now at 43 years old you don’t expect someone to just keel over no matter how they lived. And he lived! Oh how he lived. That may be a book in itself someday but the shock must have done something to my brain because I woke up saying “I want to survive, no I want to really live!” Coming to grips with all that had happened last year didn’t even begin to prepare me for what would come next. Well in the process of consoling some of my brother’s friends, I started writing to a girl that he knew when they were little. You know, same grade school, same high school, that kind of thing. They were pretty close and something sparked between them but my brother was a difficult person even back then and nothing became of it. The girl, Debby, married, had 3 wonderful boys, and was living in the same city that they both grew up in but they still drifted apart, even though Brian was the God-father of Debby’s first born, Jason. Well when Debby heard that my brother Brian had died, she was devastated. Part guilt, the rest profound sadness gripped her until she started to talk to her good friend’s older brother, who was only trying to console her. That’s when it happened. Both of us realized that by talking online we were compatible with each other. Well my father invited Debby to a family picnic because she was so close to Brian and he wouldn’t be there and well I picked her up and drove her and drove her home. Well we hit it off and the rest is history. Yeah right. Never happens. The rest is continuing to happen and in the coming months we will grow closer to each other and decide that we will spend the rest of our lives together. Now I’m no Prince Charming and most of Debby’s Sleeping Beauty days were spent with someone who never appreciated her, but we love each other and you would be surprised how good we look to each other because of it. Or maybe you wouldn’t be surprised. Ever been in love? Really? Well lets see what happens next. Every day like the first and be thankful. That is my mantra for this second time around. We will see if we have learned anything from history, or if we are doomed to repeat it. Alan is a freelance writer and has written articles on other subjects as well but most of them have a dry wit and a grandfatherly wisdom that hopefully is enjoyable to read.
