Honesty Is The Best Policy!

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Joanne Robinson Anita had often complained that she attracted men that were not very truthful with her. They had either been unfaithful; lied about their whereabouts or never spoke how they really felt. This had been a problem in her dating experiences that she wanted to change but wasnt sure how to go about it. When Anita started addressing her patterns and why she kept attracting the same type of men, she realised that she had not been very honest in some areas of her life too. Because she was driven by fear and didnt like expressing her feelings, she tended to go along with situations that she was not happy with. This meant that she wasted a lot of time building relationships with men that in her heart she knew were not right for her. For example, when Anita started dating Tom she discovered that though she liked him he wasnt someone she would want to settle down with. Rather than being truthful, Anita reasoned that as she enjoyed his company there would be no harm in keeping the relationship going. At times Anita felt pangs of guilt for not being truthful but she was afraid of hurting Tom, especially when he said that he loved her. She also harboured fears about being alone and as she gained a social life with Tom she found it all the more harder to speak up. For Anita to break her patterns, she needed to address her fears and lack of social interaction. From adolescence to late twenties, Anita had never spent any real quality time being a happy single and was always on the look out for the next guy to make her feel complete. It took some time before Anita finally reached a place where she felt comfortable being single without needing a man to make her feel normal. She also got into a support group where she could practice being honest. It meant learning new skills in expressing her feelings, confronting and saying no to things she was not comfortable living with. Anita learned that in order to break the cycle of dishonesty in her relationships she had to learn to be truthful in her heart first. As she changed, the type of men she attracted started to as well. Somehow, the men who did not like assertive or congruent behaviour felt the need to withdraw from her company. The personal investment meant that her tastes changed too and she much more enjoyed the company of a man that liked her ability to be real. Whenever we discover a repetitive pattern of unhealthy dating its important to first take a look and find out what is going on with our attraction beacon. We like what we can relate to the most, so chances are if we learn to fix the parts of us that perpetuate the problem the attraction will disappear. Changing doesnt mean that we will necessarily lose a relationship as our example can influence others to grow with us but there is no guarantee of this. Try not to let this deter you from investing in yourself because life does get better with every advancement in growth. Dating After 40: Women’s First-Date Blunders

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By R.L. Morgan In “First-date red flags that this guy isn’t for you” I talked about what men do that tell you he should be released back into the dating pool. But I’ve been curious what women do that make a man say, “She’s not for me.” Of course, everyone has their individual deal breakers, so I interviewed a few single guy pals to see if there were some common behaviors that drove them batty. Here’s what I gleaned. * Telling your date you’ve talked about him to your mother. It assumes too much permanency before even meeting. He’ll assume you want to marry him as quickly as possible. “You can hear the bear trap starting to close,” says my friend Bruce. * Sharing your baggage. Women disclose too much too soon. Save it for the second or subsequent dates. If you share too much on the first date, he’ll question your judgment about how much you tell a stranger in any situation. Hold on to see if there’s enough interest for a second date, then you can begin to slowly let your baggage come out. * Telling him your procreation time line. You tell him you want to have a baby within a year - on the first date? Watch this man run from the building. * Coming on too strong sexually. Men have shared that some women talk about sex or are too aggressive and physical on the first date, kissing, rubbing and trying to seduce a man who isn’t interested in being seduced - at least not at a first meeting. Of course, a few like it! * Nitpicking his values, life style or behaviors. If you don’t like something, decide if you can live with it or suggest changing it later, not the first date! If you can’t live with it, don’t accept a second date. * Bashing men. It seems both genders like to tell stories about their exes or bad dates. However, if you say things like, “All men want is sex,” or “Men are such jerks” you are lumping your date in with the others who’ve wronged you. No one likes to be stereotyped without a chance to show he’s not like the others. * Primping at the table. Some men despise when a woman freshens her makeup at the table or brushes her hair in a public place. Excuse yourself to the ladies room. * Ordering expensive dishes then not eating them. Women have the rap of constantly being on a diet so pick at their food. It irritates guys when a woman orders an appetizer, salad and lobster and only eats a little of each. If you know you are a light eater, offer to share something with him. Only order what you can realistically make a dent in. He’s also not fond of your taking home a doggie bag, as he feels he’s underwriting your next meal. * Drinking too much. No one likes to be around someone who’s sloshed. Limit your alcohol consumption to one or two. * Talking incessantly or loudly. It seems some women (and some men, too) are afraid of dead air. A pause once in a while is a good thing, as is asking him questions about his opinions and life, as long as you don’t interrogate him. Also, men complain that some women don’t know how to keep their voices down, and the increased volume comes across shrill. R.L. Our Criminal Courts - The Role of Defense Counsel

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Jeffrey Caminsky Imagine yourself as a young adult, pulled from friends and family and called upon to defend your country in a foreign land. One day, while on guard duty with your platoon, youre suddenly surrounded by a group of hostile, threatening peoplea jeering, taunting mob, probably armed, and stirred to anger by faceless voices in the darkness calling on them to fire. A shot rings outyour platoon returns fireand the next day, youre hauled into court and charged with murder. Your case is set for trial, and the only jury around is made up of the very same mob that was threatening you the night before. The Critical Role of Defense Counsel Defense lawyers are called upon by our system of justice for a variety of tasks. They explain to their clients what is happening, and make sure that each defendant knows his rights, and is fully aware of what is happening. As defense counsel, the lawyer is charged with protecting those rights, and ensuring that the client receives the protections afforded to every citizen by our laws. The lawyer will take over dealing with the prosecution, call and examine any witnesses in court, and do everything the law allows to keep his client from harmor, at the least, to minimize the damage. This means challenging the prosecutions case, its conduct, and on occasion, the very laws that govern the case. We often take these protections for granted, or scoff at them as mere technicalities that do little but allow criminals to escape justice. It is easy, and often tempting, to dismiss defense lawyers (and, for that matter, all lawyers) as professional hacks, whose only function is to confuse juries and confound courts. And sometimes, when defending people who are clearly guilty, it may seem that defense lawyers are a needless extravagance, who only get in the way of protecting people from the worst elements of society. But just as crimes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, criminals are often indistinguishable from the ordinary citizen, a fact that some of us only come to realize when we find ourselves seated at the defendants table, with fingers pointing at us. It is then that we realize just how critical a vigorous and independent defense bar is to a free societyallowing ordinary citizens to challenge the actions of their own government. Viewed in this light, the bedrock of American liberty is our right to use the rules we have all agreed to live by to defend ourselves in a public setting, where the actions of the same government that seeks to condemn us must prove that we have broken the law. Defense lawyers dont exist just to make everyone elses life difficult. And their job is a critical, if often misunderstood safeguard against tyranny. Just imagine what would happen if the government could decide whom to jailwithout the messiness of subjecting their actions to the test of law. The freedom of all of us would be in the hands of government bureaucratspeople, like all others, who have their likes, dislikes, biases, and petty grievances. A Safeguard of Liberty In large measure, the law exists to protect us from bullies. But without the means of challenging the actions of our own government, there would be little protection for the common citizen against a bully who happened to wear a policemans badge, or a prosecutors suit, or who happened to enjoy the friendship of someone for whom justice means doing right by his friends. And if you should ever find yourself on the wrong end of action taken by the government, you will find that the ability to resort to the law to defend yourself will be critical. Among the first casualties of Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia was the independence of the courts and the legal profession. Once those bulwarks against tyranny fell, there was nothing to protect common people against the unbridled assertion of governmental powerno matter how misguided, petty, or malevolent it might prove to be. But it is the rare government that will attack its own citizens directly: instead, the attacks come against marginal groups, ones that nobody would rise to defend, and who seem to everyone to be a threat to the security of the state. Unfortunately, those threats never seemed to end; and so the knocks on doors of enemies of the state continued, as the government kept finding new enemies to fight, and new threats to fear. The example cited at the beginning is from one of the most famous confrontations in American Historytold from the side of the defendant, rather than the victim. It was the Boston Massacre, which arose at a time of growing tensions between the Colonies and Great Britain. The encounter between soldiers and the angry mob led to shotsnobody knows for sure who fired the first one, although some testimony indicated that it was a terrified British soldierand in a country without a strong defense bar, the young soldiers would likely have been swiftly taken out and hung, if not by the Law, then by the mob itself. Thanks to a courageous Boston attorney, the defendants received a fair trial and most were acquitted on grounds of self-defense, the sentiments of the mob notwithstanding. A couple were convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter and releasedthe proper verdict when emotions and provocations dont quite excuse a homicide, but make it less an outrage and more a fallible human reaction to extreme stress. The defense lawyer was a prominent member of the state bar, who later served his country in a variety of waysstatesman, ambassador, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the second president of the new United States. It was John Adams…patriot and rebel, for the defense. How Do Keywords Effect Your Rankings

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By David Fishman When you hear everyone talking about tags they are referring on how you will summarize what your site or page is about. What else is your site (or blog) about? Deciding on the correct keywords is not an easy task but to make the work easier you should use a keyword program that will give you the proper statistics to make an educated choice when choosing the keywords for your site. Customers who search the web key in using a certain keyword, if you did not use the keyword the customer is using they will not end up at your site. Make sure you use proper tools to let you know which keywords are the most important. Many webmaster drive traffic using search engine optimization, what you need to do is optimize your website with the correct links, keywords and content and this will rank high in the free part of the search engine. These are the words or phrases that can best describe your content. Think about which words or phrases describe best your product or service and note the words used on your competitors’ websites. What if you knew exactly what words they typed when using a search engine? Keywords aren’t just some words that allow search engines, like Google, to find your web site. Keyword can be single word, two or three words, multiple words and theme based. Finding a good SEO consultant is sometimes hard to do, if you do find a good SEO person they sometimes show you techniques that will assist you in getting your site to number one. One important part when designing your site is to find an SEO consultant that is able to work with you designer, by both working together you will get a site that is well designed and seo ready. All of your other SEO strategies won’t help you at all if you choose the wrong keywords. A great tool to help find keywords that are associated with your sites theme would be overtures search term suggestion tool, you are able to retrieve statistics that we determine which keywords you should use to market your website and build your sites ranking. This is a great tool to use when you have no idea what keywords to choose from, the tools give your statistics that were just searched on. Yahoo is perhaps the only search engine that still uses the meta keywords tag but places very little weight on it. Meta Tags are most commonly used to distinguish the keywords that are relevant to a pages content. When writing articles make sure the article is in the same theme as your website, this way when you are looking for keywords you will be able to use the keywords that match your sites theme. When placing a link on the article, make sure the anchor link is one of you keywords, dont use the domain name of your site, and use the anchor link with one of you keywords. Distribute as many articles as you can with the keywords for your website, this will build on the keywords you want the search engines to use. If you are posting to directories or doing some type of reciprocal link exchange make sure the title has your keywords in it. Try not to make a title that has none of you keywords. http://www.linknetics.com is software that helps reciprocal link exchanges. Graceful Aging

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Stephania Munson So you can’t get down in the floor with your grandchildren without needing a hand or two to help you back up. Afraid you’ll look old, frail or fat, clumsy or awkward? So what? There’ll be precious few moments when the kids are still young, and begging Grandma to “Please play with us!” But there are life-things you can do, to keep the Hounds of Old Age at bay. The most important, perhaps, is maintaining a proper attitude. Remember what they say: Age is a state of mind. Psychologists tell us that aging begins at age 45. It’s at about that time in our life when we need to veer off in a new direction. Mind and body are at the center of your self. Exercise at least moderately. Even residents in nursing homes are encouraged to do ‘wheelchair aerobics.’ Listen to music as you exercise at home. Go for a brisk, daily walk around the block, if nothing else. Maintain several close friendships, other than your immediate family. Go to lunch with a friend, shopping or to church. It’s nice to know that, when your telephone rings, it won’t just be a wrong number. Social connections become even more important as you grow older, to help you avoid feeling isolated. Learn new things that have always been of interest to you, that previously you might not have had time for. The stock market, the fiber art of the Native American tribes, the novels of Henry James, astronomy and the Big Bang theory, seashells — anything that stretches your mind and makes you think and perhaps even view an issue or experience in a new light. Go to http://www.classicreader.com/ to re-read some of the novels you may have read at a younger age — Flaubert’s ‘Madame Bovary,’ or ‘The Secret Garden,’ ‘Ethan Frome,’ ‘Anna Karenina’ or more than 600 others. You can now read these great works online. Watch your diet. Concentrate on high-fiber, low-fat. Limit red meat. Accept your body, and realize that you’ll never regain the girlish figure you had at age 30. Wear comfortable clothes that fit but give you a bit of style and flair. Big hats, handbags, dramatic jewelry were made for Older Gals. Enjoy looking elegant, and don’t wear matrons shoes! Have your hair done professionally in an easy-care style. You can be much more subdued than Auntie Mame while still making your own fashion statement. Wear make-up and perfume — you’ll feel prettier! Be open to young ideas without shutting your mind like a clamshell. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you have all the answers. So be wary of giving unwanted advice, or thinking you’re the Authority. Set goals for yourself. “By June, I’ll have accomplished x and x.” Keep an eye on your money — what you have now, and what you plan to have next year. Challenge yourself to be frugal, live simply, and still have fun. Frequent the public library and used bookstores for reading material. You’re retired and live alone? Make it a point to leave the house at least once a day, weather permitting. Resolve not to be one of those whiney old people whose kids tell one another, “Have you called Mom this week? Is she OK?” You don’t want to be a Duty Call, so don’t be an obligation your children dread. You raised them to be independent, take-charge adults. And now, more than ever, you can still be a living example of How to Live a Life, even in the Golden Years. Stephania Munson edits ‘Tidbits from the Pantry’, an ezine that is sent to more than 11,000 opt-in subscribers. Trade Show Exhibit Displays

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Eddie Tobey A tradeshow is a public showing of new products and services of different vendors in a specific industry. Tradeshow exhibits are what you present at your booth to be viewed by potential buyers. Here are some tips on how to create a successful tradeshow exhibit display. First, your exhibit display must correspond with the type of tradeshow that you will be participating in. You can contact the events organizers and get the specific details, such as the type of visitors and the layout of your display area. Make sure that you know the size of your tradeshow exhibit table and have a wall space for your company sign and other necessary materials like electrical outlets and tablecloths. A tablecloth complements your tradeshow display. Even if it is already provided, bring your own that represents your companys image and motif, something that will add depth to your display and make your table be more noticeable than the others. Your tradeshow exhibit display has to be attractive and inviting to visitors so that you will get the chance to showcase and demonstrate your product further to whomever enters your booth. Your display must also be neat and orderly. Arrange your exhibit table in levels. Place the larger items at the back and the smaller and shorter ones in front of those. A topsy-turvy presentation will create a bad impression on your business and will turn your customers away. Its also imperative that your exhibit contain all the important and necessary information about your product, such as its price and special features, so that visitors will easily find what they are looking for and immediately be familiar with what you are selling. Completeness of information implies a sense of professionalism and ensures great exposure. Be sure to make your company name and logo obvious. Be creative. Use pictures, a nice presentation board, or a PowerPoint presentation on a laptop. If you are giving away free samples of your products, place them all over your display booth so people will come in and get some. Learn more of other guidelines and useful tips about tradeshow exhibits that will help you get the most out of your tradeshow experience. Use your own creativity and uniqueness to make your exhibit stand out among others. Toward Understanding

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By E. Raymond Rock If we become involved in teaching others rather than first learning for ourselves, we might misunderstand what spirituality is all about. When we truly understand, love replaces ambition, and our only concern is the hatred and competitiveness that remains among the various religious and idealistic sects. We have all developed our particular beliefs based on our own experiences, our level of awareness, and our particular idea of spirituality. As these beliefs become personalized and set, it becomes increasingly difficult for others to change our opinions. Spreading the word, which can be so effective in poverty stricken, third-world countries, or among the very young is not successful with mature adults in educated, discerning societies merely because discerning individuals have the confidence to think for themselves. Are Christians open to becoming Muslim? Are Buddhists tripping over each other to convert to Catholicism? Not really, we are mostly satisfied with our particular beliefs. If we are secure within our beliefs and find that lovingkindness is resulting from our practice, we are more than happy to live our own religion, quietly, and leave others alone, not worrying about converting them — confident that others will find their own way depending on their level of consciousness. But, if we, who quietly practice our own religion without fanfare or notoriety, are disrespected, then there could be a backlash. And what we are seeing in the world regarding sectarian, fundamentalist aggressiveness is troubling. And we are seeing it more and more. Religions, per se, which at one time were based on gentleness and peace, seem to be moving toward political, aggressive movements. Please — this is not a disparagement of true spirituality in any way, but simply a reflection, an observation, and a chance for overzealous proponents of various movements to perhaps take a long look at themselves. And then perhaps look at other religions from an attitude of respect rather than disparagement respect for all religions peaceful and truthful ideals. Then, maybe we can find a gentler, more respectful, more peaceful way to spread our particular, sectarian doctrines by example, instead of causing self-inflicted animosity. Religious beliefs shouldnt spin out of control and into war. War is not love; war reflects fear. There are good, wholesome, and harmonious qualities in all religions where a common ground can be found. It begins by accepting our different beliefs and finding peace among ourselves instead of competition, even spiritual, idealistic competition, which is of the most dangerous kind. E. In the Veggie Patch - December

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Toni Salter December is quiet in the garden, so it’s a good opportunity to attend to some of those “must-get-around-to-doing-sometime” jobs in the garden. A good purge and clear up is often in order, especially for older gardens. So hop to it! You’ll be greatful you did when the busy spring planting season comes around. If you live in the tropics, now is the start of the cool dry season and you can grow a wider variety of crops, so you’ll be run off your feet, unlike your fellow gardeners in the colder northern areas. What to plant Plant rhubarb crowns and asparagus crowns now. They’re a great addition to any garden. Aspargus crowns last for 20 years and will reward you with thick tasty spears after the first 2 or three years. Initial preparation is essential for good crops. They need to be planted deep so try to get them about 30cm below the surface an incorporate loads of compost and manures. A yearly tidy up and top dressing with manure should be all they need afterwards. You can keep planting your onion crop until late winter. Seeds sown now will be ready for harvesting from around August in some areas. In cold regions wait until after the worst of the winter weather has passed and plant “early” varieties in February or March instead. Sow peas directly into the garden and add a mixture of varieties, from old fashion shelling varieties to sugar snap and snow peas for garden salads. Most will need a trellis or climbing support. Peas provide a great source of nitrogen for the soil so plant them together with lettuce and spinach. Winter lettuce varieties go well now but you can get an early start to spring plantings if you have a nice sunny windowsill or glasshouse to keep them going until ready to plant out in February. This is for the very keen and not so faint hearted (for fear of disappointment). Add lime to your soil now if it is slightly acidic. Check the pH with a simple test kit bought at your local nursery. Peas, spinach and onions like a slightly alkaline soil (pH of 7.0 up to 8.0). Consider sowing a green manure crop to help add nutrients and bulk to your soil. A green manure crop is a fast growing plant (usually 6-8 weeks) that is grown only to about knee height, then slashed and turned back into the soil. Some plants you can use are oats, pod vetch, lupins, mustard, red clover or even broad beans can also be used. A legume (or plant producing a bean-like pod) adds nitrogen to the soil through the roots and bulky mulching material is added through slashing the leaves before it has a chance to flower. Roses Now is rose time and with some extra time this month you can scour the catalogues and nurseries to purchase and plant any exciting new additions or even put in some of the old favourites. Remember roses will need to be pruned between mid December to mid January for best results. If you suspect any late frosts then leave it later rather than earlier. Prune them back to at least half their size, I go as far as 1/3. This encourages strong watershoots to appear in Spring giving plants a good strong framework and lots of healthy new canes to flower on. Odd jobs Mulching now may protect your plants from winter frosts by buffering temperature extremes. It also keeps moisture in and cuts down on the need to water your veggies too often. Make sure you lay it at least 5 to 7 cm thick otherwise you’ll be disappointed and weeds will start coming through. You can use any deciduous leaves that have fallen now as mulch. Or better still compost them first and use the compost in Spring. A word of warning when collecting leaves around the garden: dispose of any diseased leaves otherwise you could inadvertantly spread the disease rith throughout your garden with disastrous results next summer. Deciduous leaves are hard to break down becuse they lack nitrogen. They will last a long time in the garden but can also prevent water passing through if they are laid too thickly. This makes leaves ideal to create paths between your garden beds. Usually paths between beds get a lot of wear and tear, so take the time this winter to define your garden beds and get rid of the half worn grass around them. Place a good layer of damp newspaper straight on top of your grass, define the garden edges with plastic, timber, terracotta or concrete edges and then lay the leaves directly on top of the newspaper. Make it a thick layer as it will settle down over the next few months. Now is a good time to prune and tidy up all areas of your garden. Consider rigging up a composting area with 3 individual bays to hold the different stages of decomposing material. A triple system allows you to create a pile and then turn it into the next bay. This is a much easier way to turn your heap than trying to turn it onto itself, where you never seem to be able” to quite reach that bit in the bottom”. Keep turning it into the next bay and then you can leave the last bay as storage for your finished compost. This will continue to break down over time and can also become a great spot for earthworms. Remember to keep it covered so that rainfall doesn’t leach out any of the goodies before you need it. Pest alert! Winter is usually a pest free time in the garden, but don’t be fooled. Many will pupate over this time. Similarly, fungus is laying dormant just waiting for warmer conditions to spread it’s deadly force. So don’t become too complacent. Fruit fly and codlin moth in apples are ones to watch out for. Remove any fallen fruit that may harbour their little eggs or maggots. Ensure that your orchard area is clean and you’ll avoid many problems. Now is a good time to consider some companion planting. Green Harvest have a wonderful “Good Bug Mix” of seeds to sow around your fruit trees and near the veggie patch. It’s a mixture of continual flowering herbs and plants that will attract the natural predators. Worth getting a pack or two. Keep an eye out for caterpillars still, especially on vulnerable young cabbage family plants. Hand removal is often best. Use Dipel (Bt) if you have to. Spray bordeaux mix for fungal problems like leaf curl, shot hole, rust, apple & pear scab and brown rot. This is done now to minimize damage to leaves. Fruit trees I always think of apple pie at this time of year. The old favourite recipe gets me special appreciation from the kids as well as hubby and it leaves those factory frozen ones for dead. So it’s worth putting in a Granny Smith just for the “love factor”. Many can be grown in pots now along with other dwarf stone fruit. Take a look at my article on creating an orchard in a pot at Veggie Lady articles. You’ll be surprised by what you can achieve in a relatively small space. Pruning of your apple and pear trees takes place now. Shape them into an “open vase” by removing the inward growing shoots and leaving the more vertical branches alone. More fruiting occurs on this vertical growth and the shape will improve air circulation to prevent fungal problems. Try growing some espaliered on a north facing wall or in rows running north-south. Encourage one or two vertical “leaders” and then tie down the long soft branches to horizontal that come from the central leader. You’ll have to wait for spurs to grow from the horizontal branch before fruiting occurs. Now is a good time to order and plant decidous fruit trees that arrive “bare rooted”. This means that they come without any soil attached and should be planted quickly to they don’t dry out. Give the longer roots a trim and tidy up so that you can spread the roots out as you plant it in the hole. Make sure the hole is big enough and incorporate some good compost when back-filling. I avoid putting manure in the planting hole since direct contact with the roots can burn them. Instead top dress with some manure, mulch heavily and give it a good water. By the time the tree breaks its dormancy and starts to grow, it’ll have a good supply of nutrients from the boken down manure above. You can revive old fruit trees by cutting back one third of a tree’s branches every 3 years. By the end of the 3 years you should have cut back the entire tree. Don’t cut all the branches at once, it throws the tree into chaos and it sends out shoots everywhere (this is unfortunately what i did in time gone by - oh for the value of education!!). When new shoots appear, simply rub off the smaller ones and just keep best ones to form the new shape of the tree. The vigorous new growth will reward you with good fruit production. Grape vines should be cut back very hard, which may seem savage but it is necessary. Leave only short 3-bud spurs at 20cm intervals along the main branch. This is important for preventing disease and getting good fruit. Replace your strawberries about every 3 years. Many get diseased and affected by viruses. All new runners put out by infected plants will contain the problem. So it is best to replace with new, fresh and disease-free plants for better cropping. Citrus are in full swing now so enjoy your sweeter navels as they come into season. My kids never ate oranges until I gave them a bowl of home grown, sweet and juicy organic navel oranges. They devoured them in one sitting, with juice streaming down the sides of their mouths!! Mandarins, limes and grapefruits are harvested now too, along with banana passionfruit, avocados, guavas and olives. About the Author Toni Salter is the ‘Veggie Lady’. Traits Of Successful Relationships

By Tim Connor A few weeks ago in my weekly relationship tip, I asked my subscribers to consider some self development relationship questions. I received a number of responses people asking me my opinion of the necessary traits of successful relationships. So here they are and in no particular order of importance. - The ability to get past the infatuation stage quickly. - Realistically managing your expectations of your partner. - Continuing to work on your own self-esteem. - Letting go of old baggage at least once a week. - Having a similar life outlook. - The willingness to accept that there are other ways of looking at things than your own. - Staying focused on what is right, positive and good about your relationship. - Maintaining your own identity. - Taking responsibility for your share of the relationship successes as well as issues. - Keeping you ego out of the relationship entirely. - Not seeing the behaviors of your partner that you dont like as faults. - Not invalidating your partner in any way either in public or private. - Avoiding emotional game playing. - Having a safe emotional environment. - Keeping the romance alive. - Having some common goals. - Being able to talk about money issues without getting defensive or in a blame mode. - Spending adequate time together. - The ability to have honest, open and vulnerable sharing of feelings, needs, fears, dreams, hopes and frustrations. - Having a sex life that is fulfilling and satisfying. - Doing something fun together at least once a week. - Similar spiritual values. - Managing differences in a positive way. - Maintaining a high level of trust and respect. I will guarantee that you can add an item or two to this list. It is by all means not the end all in successful relationship traits or behaviors. But it is a start. If you have most of these Ill guarantee you are well on your way to a long and mutually nurturing and reward life with your partner. No relationship is without stress, problems or frustrations. The key to success is to develop systems or routines for disarming these before they tear away at the fabric of your relationship.
